You’re an artist? A storyteller? A filmmaker? You love graphic design and want to learn the high art of animation? The “Motion Graphics Design Academy” is an in-depth look at the production of impressive animations. It includes descriptions of a complex design process from classical static design theory to modern animation techniques. With the combination of professional knowledge and appealing storytelling you’ll be able to improve your artistic skills and to impress your clients and audience!

We see a square.

It rotates and fluently transforms into a logo that is perfectly presented on a background of moving elements. Everything seems to be in harmony. Colors, shapes, movements, sound, typography. Every single detail is loaded with meaning to support a message. A story from an author whose tools are not limited to words and sentences. A story from a painter whose tools are not limited to a brush, a canvas and colors, but who has access to every artistic form of expression imaginable: The creative world of motion graphic design. The art of transforming static elements (graphics, images, texts, logos, etc.) into moving designs by giving them another dimension: time.

Since the first days of mankind, people have tried to illustrate motion in static pictures. We even know cave paintings from the Stone Age that show people and animals with several legs to give a sense of motion in static images. Nowadays, we have all the techniques needed to create real moving images. All we need to learn is how to deal with designs and how to use our tools the right way, to transform our imagination into visible art.

Why am I writing this book?

Well, more than ten years ago, when I started to discover the creative world of motion graphics, I was overwhelmed by its artistic and narrative powers. Never before had I seen a comparable form of media that is able to seamlessly unite meaningful graphics, emotional sound, and exciting motion into one piece of art. I decided to become part of this art and started consuming everything about that topic. Tutorials for designs are a great way to learn more about the several tools and to become a master in your favorite software. However, there is one thing they do not teach you: How to design. At some point you have to step out of your comfort zone and start working on your own designs. Start being an artist! In the course of this ebook I will not go too much into detail on different software and how they work. There are plenty of resources about that issue and I want you to view software as a tool, a means to an end. Do not restrict yourself to one software. They are all interchangeable. Your knowledge about design and how it works is not interchangeable. That is why I will concentrate on you as an artist and the improvement of your skills.

Together with my education in art, my studies in the field of media and design and the knowledge I received from many resources about motion graphics, I was finally able to construct my own design process. A detailed plan that helps me create my own motion graphics, that carry my personality and are always something special. Since then I have worked on plenty of motion graphics for various clients, including big movie studios, huge companies, and leisure projects. And every design was one of a kind. For the sake of unique art I finally decided to share my knowledge and my detailed design process, to give you, dear reader, an inside look into what I have learned during the last years. Hopefully this will save you a bit of time and help you through that frustrating moments, when you do not know what comes next. May this book give you some thought-provoking impulse and inspire you for your next creative and unique motion graphic.

The “Motion Graphics Design Academy”

is for people who want to learn more about the basics of design, animation, and project design. It’s for newcomers, graphic designers who want to add a new dimension to their art, everyone dealing with digital image processing, and especially all kinds of filmmakers who want to improve their movies, trailers, title sequences, video clips, and commercials.

The goal of the eBook is to give its readers a profound background knowledge about design and animation principles and to improve their artistic skills. Software and plug-ins are changing constantly. But all that theory about storytelling, animation, color, typefaces, composition & compositing will stay the same.
